Published: Thursday, May 21st, 2009 Fishing For Cash In Bandon, your prize could be more than just the crab or salmon you net. The Crab Derby and Salmon Derby promise cash prizes for those who catch specially marked crabs or the largest salmon.

The third-annual Bandon Crab Derby runs from July 1 to Sept. 6. More than 100 crabs, each affixed with a brass tag, will be placed in Bandon's bay. Those who catch one of the "special" crabs any time during the derby and bring the crab to Tony's Crab Shack on the Port of Bandon boardwalk for verification are eligible for cash prizes.

The Crab Derby and the Salmon Derby were started by Dave and Eileen Schradieck, owners of Bandon Beach Vacation Rentals LLC, to draw visitors to the area for fun events.

A Web site has been created that gives more detailed information about the Crab Derby, as well as links to a tide chart, marine and weather forecasts at http://www.BandonCrabDerby.com. More information also can be obtained at Tony's Crab Shack on the boardwalk.

The second-annual Bandon Salmon Derby will be held from Sept. 8 to Oct. 31. The person catching the biggest salmon during that period will win a cash prize, providing the salmon has been weighed, logged in and photographed at Bandon Bait & Tackle. There are two chances to win: on Sept. 30, the person who has caught the largest salmon so far will win a cash prize; on Oct. 31, the person who caught the largest salmon over the entire derby also will win a cash prize as well as a new rod and reel from Bandon Bait & Tackle. Guides and their clients are excluded and there is no entrance fee.
