Welcome To Bandon Visitors Guide 2010

• Coquille River Lighthouse

Coquille River Lighthouse Even though the Coquille River Lighthouse no longer serves as a warning for mariners, it still towers over the mouth of the river, proudly serving as a beacon for locals and visitors alike.

One of Oregon's most visited attractions for tourists and photographers, the historic landmark stands as a lone sentry on the north jetty of the Coquille River, and as a reminder of days past. Erected in 1896, the masonry lighthouse sat crumbling for decades after it was decomissioned in 1939.

Because of storm-caused weather damage that escalates with each passing winter, park workers and lighthouse supporters are conducting a long-term restoration campaign. Visitors from years past will notice that the base and tower were repainted this year, with a fresh coat of paint that, according to preservation architects, are more historically accurate. In addition to the new paint, installation of new doors and windows, new stairways and railings, new restrooms and replicas of original pieces of architecture will continue to take place over the next few years.

The lighthouse is accessed through Bullards Beach State Park (just north of Bullards Bridge on U.S. Highway 101) and is located at the end of the park road that winds through the scenic grounds.

In April the the lighthouse is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. During May and October the hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. In June, July, August and September the lighthouse is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Monday and Tuesday. The lighthouse is closed from November through March.

Park Ranger Pam Stevens asks that vistors call ahead for any closure times.

"We will keep the lighthouse open to the public as much as possible," she said.

Stevens added that in the event the lighthouse is closed, the gift shop featuring lighthouse theme memorabilia - clothing, cups, cards and other unique items - will remain open, with all proceeds earmarked for the restoration project
Information regarding the restoration project is available at the state park gift store or by calling 347-2209 or can also be accessed through the Bandon Chamber of Commerce Web site at http://www.bandon.com.
