• South Slough National Estuarine Reserve

Published: Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 South Slough National Estuarine Reserve The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is a protected estuary that offers unsurpassed beauty to be enjoyed by all through hiking, canoeing, fishing, organized activities and an interpretive center.

South Slough is located north of Bandon. Take Highway 101 to Seven Devils Road, turn west and go toward Charleston eight miles. Signs will direct you to the entrance.

The Big Cedar Trail is designed for physically challenged persons and allows them a chance to enjoy the beauty of South Slough. The trail itself is open to all people, but the special gated key access is designed for the handicapped.

Hidden Creek Watershed interpretive signs were installed last year. The signs start at the interpretive center and describe various sites along the Hidden Creek trail.

The Ten Minute Trail is a short plant identification loop near the interpretive center.

Wasson Creek Trail is a 3/4-mile loop that traverses rolling terrain with some steep sections, and wanders through upland forest and open meadows.

The Estuary Study Trail runs a full three miles with a series of loops descending to the shore of South Slough. Some sections are steep and rugged.

Canoe launches are located at the Hinch Road bridge and at the Charleston Shipyards in Charleston. Group canoe outings are offered.

Throughout the year, South Slough staff conduct workshops and give presentations on topics such as local archaeology, wildflowers, edible plants and local birds. The schedule is usually printed in the Bandon Western World or The World newspapers.
