Free Flight Bird and Marine Mammal Rehabilitation, Ltd., a Bandon institution for more than 30 years, continues to evolve, re-inventing itself with each passing year to better care for wildlife and the community. The private, nonprofit wildlife hospital provides medical attention and rehabilitation to Oregon's orphaned birds, mammals and marine mammals. Founder Dan Deuel started Free Flight on Coquille Point in 1976 "to take care of a few oiled birds," and did so until his unexpected death in 2006.
Deuel will be remembered as the driving force in Free Flight's efforts, but his dedication and hard work has not been forgotten, and the facility's volunteers, under the guidance of his wife, MeriJane Deuel, continue this important mission.
Since its inception, the wildlife hospital has cared for thousands of animals, from raptors to bear cubs. Yet, Deuel is continually developing the program, this year focusing on integrating with other local wildlife organizations and concentrating on public education and awareness.
To promote education on behavior and habitat, Free Flight offers educational lectures and tours of the facility, introducing guests to the permanent residents with injuries that prevent their release. Tours and lectures are available by appointment and can be arranged by calling (541) 347-3882.
The dedicated staff, though trained in rehabilitation techniques, is completely volunteer and allows Free Flight to continue its important mission.
Strict guidelines enforced by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service must be met before an animal can be rescued. Many animals that may appear to be injured are actually displaying normal behavior for their species. Spring is pupping (birthing) season for the marine mammals that inhabit the offshore rookeries. Various species of marine mammal pups can be observed resting along the shore. This is a natural condition, and the pups should be left alone. If a pup is suffering from an obviously life-threatening trauma, such as a dog attack, bullet wound or boat strike, do not move the pup. Instead, call the Oregon Stranding Network toll-free at 1-800-452-7888.
The organization receives no local, state or federal funds, and relies solely on public support, making community involvement crucial. Those who would like to aid Free Flight in its mission may send tax-deductible contributions to Free Flight Bird and Marine Mammal Rehabilitation, 1185 Portland Ave., Bandon 97411.
