• Teaching Respect for the Shoreline

Teaching Respect for the Shoreline Shoreline Education for Awareness Inc. was founded in Bandon in 1990 to support the outdoor education missions of the Oregon State Parks and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. SEA docents are trained by local professionals to help both visitors and locals see and understand the wildlife that live along our shoreline. This education about the shoreline is intended to increase awareness, and hence enhance stewardship.

SEA has been adopted by the USFWS as
"Friends of the Southern Oregon Coastal Refuges." Docents are stationed on weekends in the spring from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Coquille Point to provide interpretation of the resources on Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Coquille Point is a unit of that refuge and provides an opportunity to view breeding sea birds on the offshore rocks and harbor seals, which haul out on the rocks to rest up and warm. SEA docents are identifiable by their royal blue jackets with a round SEA logo on the back.

SEA is a co-sponsor of the annual Oregon Shorebird Festival, held Aug. 29, 30 and 31 at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston. Field trips to Bandon birding locations are featured during the festival.
