Published: Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 Bandon Facts Schools: The Bandon School District provides public education and school bus service, plus special education. The superintendent is Diane Buche. Grades kindergarten through fourth are at Ocean Crest Elementary School, 5Ð8 at Harbor Lights Middle School, 9Ð12 at Bandon High. Pacific Christian School offers pre-school to eighth. Marcene Rebeck offers a Montessori preschool, the Bandon Preschool (formerly St. John's) has several options for preschool-aged children, The Wilderland School in Langlois also offers a Montessori-based preschool and first-grade, and Head Start offers preschool for low-income families. A few licensed home day-care facilities are also available.

Hospital: Southern Coos Hospital and Health Center is Bandon's medical facility located at 900 11th St. SE (the far eastern end of that street). The administrator is Jim Wathen. Newly built in 1999, Southern Coos Hospital is filled with state-of-the-art equipment and is adequately staffed to meet the needs of its patient base.
The hospital offers 24-hour Emergency services, surgical services, medical imaging including a nationally certified mammography program, laboratory services, nursing services, respiratory therapy and rehabilitation services. The Specialty Clinic/outpatient services feature a certified wound specialist, podiatry care and surgery.
It is supported by taxes and patient fees. There also are doctors with offices in town.
Assisted Living facilities: Heritage Place, Harmony Estates and Westwind Court, as well as in-home health care

Police: Twenty-four-hour coverage is provided by the city of Bandon Police Department and the Coos County Sheriff's Office. The Bandon police chief is Bob Webb, who manages a force of six officers and several reserves. The police department business phone number is 347-2241. The 24-hour number for the Coos County Sheriff's Office is 1-541-756-2020, ext. 373. In emergency situations, dial 9-1-1.

Fire Department: The volunteer staff stores apparatus at its new location just south of town off U.S. Highway 101 and at rural stations. In an emergency, call 9-1-1. Bandon's fire chief is Lanny Boston. Backyard burning and burn barrels are prohibited in city limits.

Utilities: City water, sewer and electric services are provided by the city of Bandon. Coos Curry Electric Cooperative and Pacific Power & Light provide power to areas not served by the city. Rural areas use wells and septic systems. Comspan provides fiber-optic Internet, phone and cable TV services.

City Services: City Hall and the police department are located in the same building on Highway 101. The Bandon Public Library is located at 1204 11th St. S.W. in Bandon's City Park. The City Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at City Hall. Questions on permits and other municipal issues can be directed to city staff. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Transportation: A public transit van is available weekdays. Call 347-4131 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Bandon State Airport is located about two miles south of town.

Newspapers: Bandon Western World, weekly; also publishes daily Coffee Break. Located at 1185 Baltimore Ave.; telephone 347-2423; Web site: www.bandonwesternworld.com. The World of Coos Bay, The Register-Guard of Eugene and The Sunday Oregonian of Portland are available on racks and through home delivery. Out-of-state and other local papers are available for review at the library.

Television: A full range of cable channels is available from ComSpan of Bandon and Charter Communications. Antennas can receive Channels 11 and 5. Satellite service is available through several area companies.

Radio: KBDN (96.5 FM), with a "classic rock-'n'-roll" format, is licensed to serve Bandon. Coos Bay and Coquille stations are also received.

Museum: The museum is located on Highway 101 at Fillmore Avenue. It is operated by the Bandon Historical Society.

Arts: The Bandon Playhouse, Bandon Showcase, New Artists Productions and other community groups offer theater and musical productions throughout the year. Galleries feature works of area and nationally known artists. The Oregon Coast Music Association and the Community Concert Association offers local concerts throughout the year.

Economy: Oregon Overseas Timber Co. processes timber products; Moore Mill harvests logs; Ocean Spray Cranberry Cooperative members and other independent growers produce millions of dollars worth of cranberries in area bogs. There is a healthy tourism industry, which includes Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and other tourist-related businesses, such as motels, restaurants, visitor attractions, etc.

Boat basin: Facilities are owned and operated by the Port of Bandon. The office and shop are located in the Old Coast Guard Building at the west end of First Street SW.
Be sure to stop by the Visitor Information Center, located under the Old Town arch on Second Street SE. It is operated by the Bandon Chamber of Commerce and is the only center on the coast that is open all year, seven days a week.
